How to Change Oil By Yourself – Step by Step

In this article, we are going to show you how to change the oil on your 2007 Toyota Prius by yourself. This is a very simple process and should only take about 30 minutes of your time.

The tools that you will need:

  • a good quality jack stands or ramps,
  • wrenches and sockets appropriate for removing lug nuts,
  • drain pan to catch old oil as it drains out,
  • filter wrench,
  • an oil filter that matches what is specified in your owners manual (or equivalent aftermarket part),
  • new washer/gasket for the drain bolt,
  • new crush washer for the oil filler cap
  • fresh engine oil.

STEP 1: PREP

Park your car on a level surface, set the parking brake, and open the hood.

Place jack stands or ramps under the frame rails near the front and rear of the car to support it safely in the air. Never work under a car that is only supported by a jack!

STEP 2: REMOVE THE COVER

Remove lug nuts from all four wheels using a socket wrench. If you have wheel locks installed, you will need to use an appropriate tool to remove them as well.

Place drain pan directly underneath where the oil plug is located (typically found at the very bottom of the engine)

Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain completely into the pan. Replace it with a new crush washer or gasket, if applicable. If you’re having trouble removing this bolt, use an adjustable wrench (also called crescent wrenches) to loosen it first. STEP 4: PUT BACK THE DRAIN PLUG

Once the oil has drained completely, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it using your ratchet set or socket wrench. Make sure that it is tight so that no leaks occur when you start driving again.

Now that the old oil has finished draining out, it’s time to remove the oil filter. If your car requires a special tool like, use the filter wrench to loosen it and then pull it straight off. Be careful not to drop it or you will have a mess on your hands! If there is any old gasket material stuck to the filter housing or engine block, carefully scrape it away using a screwdriver or other sharp object before installing the new filter.

Once everything looks good (no leaks), let it idle again without revving until normal operating temperature has been reached (around 170 degrees Fahrenheit). This entire procedure should last no more than half an hour depending.
